How to Choose the Right All-Inclusive Resort
Adults-only or family? Big and lively or small and quiet? A practical checklist for finding the resort that fits.
Two resorts can share a beach, a star rating and a price and still deliver completely different vacations. One is a lively family resort with a water park and themed dinners; next door is an adults-only retreat where the loudest sound is the blender at the pool bar. Choosing well starts with being honest about how you like to spend a day.
Resort Styles
Adults-only
Couples, honeymoons and friends’ getaways. Expect more à la carte dining, quieter pools and spa focus. Minimum ages differ by resort.
Family
Kids’ and teens’ clubs, splash parks, connecting rooms and family suites. Look for supervised clubs that fit your children’s ages.
Luxury all-inclusive
Fewer rooms, suites with plunge pools or butlers, top-shelf drinks and better food. Higher prices, but fewer hidden extras.
Resort-within-a-resort
Big complexes with an upgraded club section: private pool, lounge and beach area while sharing the main resort’s restaurants and shows.
Party and social
Foam parties, DJ pool days and late-night clubs. Great for groups of friends; not for a quiet honeymoon.
Eco and boutique
Small, design-led resorts, common around Tulum and on smaller islands, often with farm-to-table dining.

Your Resort Checklist
- The beach. Is it swimmable, rocky, seasonal-seaweed-prone or reef-protected? Ask for recent photos.
- Restaurants. How many à la carte restaurants, and do they need reservations? Is there a surcharge for any of them?
- Drinks. House brands or premium? Is the in-room minibar restocked and included?
- Room location. Oceanfront, ocean view and garden view are very different. Ask how far the room is from the beach and the pool bar.
- Transfers. How far is the airport, and are transfers included?
- Fees. Resort fees, Wi-Fi, safe fees and local taxes — what does the final price include?
- Refurbishment. When was the resort last renovated? Construction can affect a stay.
Weddings, Honeymoons and Groups
All-inclusives are ideal for destination weddings and group trips: one price per person makes it easy for guests to budget, and many resorts offer free wedding packages or group perks above a certain number of rooms. Choosing FAQ
Are adults-only resorts worth it?
For couples, honeymooners and friends’ trips, usually yes: quieter pools, more à la carte dining and a slower pace. The age limit varies (commonly 16 or 18), so check if you are traveling with teenagers.
What is a “club level” or “preferred” room?
An upgraded category in a resort-within-a-resort: a private lounge, reserved beach area, better drinks and sometimes butler or concierge service. It can be worth it at large, busy resorts.
How big should the resort be?
Large resorts offer more restaurants, shows and activities but can mean long walks and busy pools. Small resorts are calmer and more personal but offer fewer choices. Five to eight restaurants suits most week-long stays.
