All-Inclusive Resorts, Explained & Compared

One price for your room, meals, drinks and beach time. Find the right region and resort style for you, then let a specialist compare the deals.

Compare the regions »

An all-inclusive vacation takes the arithmetic out of a beach trip. You pay one rate up front and then stop reaching for your wallet: breakfast, lunch, dinner, the swim-up bar and the kayaks are already covered. That simplicity is why all-inclusives dominate Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Punta Cana and Jamaica. It is also why the details matter. “All-inclusive” is a marketing term, not a standard, and two resorts side by side on the same beach can include very different things.

This guide is built to help you choose well. Start with the region, because it sets your flight time, your weather and your price range. Then choose the resort style: adults-only, family, luxury or big-and-lively. Finally, check what is included so there are no surprises at checkout.

How to Pick the Right All-Inclusive

1. Start with the flight

From the eastern U.S., Cancún, Punta Cana, Montego Bay and Nassau are short nonstops from many cities. From the West, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are closer. Compare fares on AirfaresForLess.com.

2. Pick the beach you want

Calm, swimmable water (Aruba, Punta Cana, Cancún’s north shore, Grace Bay) or dramatic scenery with rougher surf (Cancún’s eastern Hotel Zone, the Pacific side of Los Cabos).

3. Match the resort to your group

Couples, families, friends’ trips and multi-generation groups all want different things. See Choosing a Resort.

4. Read the inclusions

Specialty restaurants, premium drinks, room service, Wi-Fi and airport transfers vary resort to resort. See What’s Included.

All-Inclusive Questions, Answered

What does “all-inclusive” usually cover?

Your room, all meals and snacks, most drinks (including alcohol), non-motorized water sports, pools, entertainment and usually taxes and service charges. Spa treatments, premium wines and spirits, motorized sports, off-site excursions and some à la carte dining normally cost extra. Every resort draws the line differently, so read the inclusions list before you book.

Is an all-inclusive cheaper than paying as you go?

Often, if you eat three meals a day at the resort and have a few drinks. It is less of a bargain if you plan to eat out, drink little, or spend most days on excursions. Compare the all-inclusive rate with a room-only rate plus a realistic daily food-and-drink budget.

Where are the most all-inclusive resorts?

Mexico (Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Los Cabos and the Puerto Vallarta area), the Dominican Republic (especially Punta Cana) and Jamaica have the largest concentrations. Aruba, Saint Lucia, Antigua, Turks & Caicos and the Bahamas also have strong choices. Hawaii has very few true all-inclusives.

Should I choose adults-only or a family resort?

Adults-only resorts are quieter and built around couples, dining and spas; family resorts add kids’ clubs, water parks and connecting rooms. Some large resorts split the difference with a separate adults-only section. Our resort-choosing guide walks through the options.

When is the best time to book an all-inclusive?

For Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day and spring break, book several months ahead. Late spring and early fall are usually the best value. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so consider travel insurance for summer and fall trips.
