The Caribbean invented the modern couples’ all-inclusive, and it still offers the widest range of them, from vast 1,000-room resorts with water parks to small, adults-only hideaways. The trick is matching the island to the trip. Flight time, beach type, the size of the resort scene and how easy it is to get out and explore all vary a great deal from island to island.

Island by Island

Dominican Republic — Punta Cana, Cap Cana and Puerto Plata

The Caribbean’s all-inclusive powerhouse. Punta Cana and the neighboring Bávaro coast have miles of palm-fringed sand lined with resorts at every price point, from family giants to high-end adults-only properties. Flights land at Punta Cana International (PUJ), usually a short transfer from the hotel zone. Puerto Plata on the north coast is quieter and older-fashioned. Entry and exit require the Dominican Republic’s free online e-ticket. Compare Punta Cana hotel rates or Puerto Plata hotels.

Jamaica — Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios

Jamaica is the home of the couples’ all-inclusive and still one of the best places for one. Montego Bay has the main airport (MBJ) and the biggest cluster of resorts. Negril, about an hour and a half west, is famous for its Seven Mile Beach and cliff-top sunsets. Ocho Rios on the north coast is close to Dunn’s River Falls. Our Jamaica Vacation Planner covers the island in depth, and RoomsCheap lists Negril hotels.

Aruba

Dry, breezy and sunny most of the year, Aruba sits outside the main hurricane belt, which makes it a favorite for fall trips. Its calm, clear west-coast water at Eagle Beach and Palm Beach suits families and weak swimmers. Aruba has fewer all-inclusives than Punta Cana or Jamaica, and many visitors mix a resort stay with the island’s restaurants. Visitors must complete Aruba’s online ED card before arrival. Saint Lucia

Green volcanic mountains, the twin Pitons, rainforest and sheltered bays make Saint Lucia the Caribbean’s most romantic backdrop. Most resorts sit in the north around Rodney Bay or on the dramatic southwest coast near Soufrière. International flights mostly use Hewanorra (UVF) in the far south, so transfers to northern resorts can be long. Browse Saint Lucia hotels.

Antigua, Turks & Caicos and the Bahamas

Antigua is known for its many beaches and sailing heritage, with several couples’ resorts. Turks & Caicos centers on Providenciales and the famous Grace Bay, with high-end resorts and fewer, pricier all-inclusives. The Bahamas is the quickest trip from Florida, with all-inclusives on Nassau’s Cable Beach and in the Exumas. Compare Antigua, Turks & Caicos and Nassau hotel rates.

Caribbean All-Inclusive FAQ

Which Caribbean island is best for an all-inclusive?

For choice and value, the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) and Jamaica. For calm water and dependable sunshine, Aruba. For scenery and romance, Saint Lucia. For a short flight from Florida, the Bahamas. For a high-end, quiet beach, Turks & Caicos.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, U.S. citizens flying to these islands need a valid passport. Some islands also require an online entry form: the Dominican Republic uses a free e-ticket, and Aruba requires an online ED card. Always check the current rules before you travel.

Is it safe to leave the resort?

Millions of visitors do so every year. Use licensed taxis or resort-booked tours, keep valuables in the room safe and check the U.S. State Department’s advisory for your destination before you go.

What about hurricane season?

The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and usually peaks from August to October. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao sit south of the main storm track. For summer and fall trips, buy travel insurance and ask about the resort’s hurricane guarantee.
